Hong Kong (1)

Some differences I have noticed already between HK and NZ:
 1. There are beggars and they all have ripped clothes and often have an arm or a leg missing. One guy I think was pretending to have one missing.
2. There are lots of run down old apartment blocks in the centre of HK as well as [...]

Getting to HK

Today we are catching the plane to HK. Dad dropped us off at the airport and went to return the car to the guys we rented it from
Unfortunately we were travelling on Lufthansa which has useless in flight entertainment and no personal TVs. We got on the plane at 6pm and the flight was 10 [...]

Departure

In preparation for our flight to HK we ditched or donated everything that we felt we could do without, and still felt that mildly sinking feeling that you get when you survey the result: 5 bulging packs and 2 big bags that feel as tho they are filled with rocks…..plus substantial hand luggage. Fun times [...]

Last night in Europe

It was our last night in Germany and we had dinner at a restaurant. By the time we had packed up our packs and got there it was 9pm
I had beef and dumplings and pickled red cabbage (which I gave to mum immediately). Joseph and Paddy had pork and fried onions and potatoes and Dad [...]

Sweden (2)

More bicycles, flat land, excellent English and soused herring – the south of Sweden is very like Denmark.
While B was at work I got the kids wandering around Lund, a very pretty little university town. When J got sick of that, which didn’t take too long, I sent him back to do some more [...]

Sweden (1)

We are staying in Lund at a Youth Hostel that is an old train that doesn’t move and it’s really cool because it reminds me of the Hogwart’s Express. Three people share a compartment and there are three bunks all on top of each other. It is pretty cramped but there is a ladder on [...]

Denmark – Copenhagen

We went to Tivoli Gardens which is a theme park in Copenhagen. We weren’t going to go until we saw there was an end of season special for less than half price. Since it is in the centre of the town we decided to go there briefly at first, then look around the town for [...]

Denmark

Flat, tidy, wealthy and friendly, with almost as many bicycles as Amsterdam. And everyone speaks incredibly good English ….the girl on the checkout, the man directing traffic for road works, the passer by whom I accost at the petrol station. Like the Dutch, they subtitle rather than dub English and American programmes on TV (our [...]
