• Paddy – cold NZ milk, cornflakes, Dr Who and The Big Bang Theory.
• Joseph – weetbix, pies, milk, watching NBA (basketball) on TV.
• Ellen – won’t say – your lists are just embarrassing (my guess is regular access to Facebook).
• Brian –nothing. His plan when he retires is to travel continuously. (I am invited apparently.)
• Annie –washing our clothes and, most of all, our filthy day packs in my own washing machine. I am especially looking forward to lifting the lid and seeing it all swirling around and then inspecting the rinse water (grey? brown? black?). The final satisfaction comes from seeing the washing dancing and sparkling on the line and I just know I will go outside a few times just to admire it. Call me pathetic…

We have all survived almost 24 hour a day contact for six weeks with marital and family ties intact. True, Brian has periodically needed to escape the almost continuous talking (and it’s not always me) for some quiet time to recharge his batteries; Joseph the same but to allow himself, or others, the illusion that he is travelling with cool friends rather than with his embarrassing family; Ellen’s fury at having her cherished autonomy and independence challenged by my helpful nagging has been soothed by Brian’s tactful charm; Patrick used up his lifetime’s quota of sulking and grudge bearing on our last trip overseas in 2008, and on this trip has been positively sunny; and I, frustrated and appalled by the Flaherty males’ tolerance for dirt (unwashed hands, grubby sheets, grimy clothes go ignored) have learnt a lesson, though I don’t know quite what – I have been the sickest of all of us on this trip (although Brian is making a last minute dash for the finish line as I type, and is likely to pip me at the post, and Joseph, strictly speaking, has only lost by a nose. Ellen and Patrick are the only ones not in the race).

Few fights, few sulks, lots of laughing at each other – and at other things of course – and lots of games of Oh Hell. There are no money worries because the cost of living here is so much lower than in NZ, we eat out at least twice a day, and our days are busy with travelling and sightseeing in a different world with people of all sorts – kind, funny, horrible, interesting, but always worthy of (my) comment. Add to this good weather, books, notebook laptop, iPods and frequent wifi, and it all makes a good recipe for a family adventure.

Border crossings … we’ve done a few. And yesterday’s was certainly the worst. We departed Siem Reap in Cambodia (Angkor territory) at 8am and arrived in Bangkok at 7pm. The distance wasn’t so far, but the multiple stops for petrol and free meals for the driver added a couple of hours. The biggest delay was the crossing itself: slowly queuing with our now bulging packs in 30+ degree sunshine and what felt like 75% humidity for three hours in the middle of the day.

The backpackers’ part of Bangkok is humming with tourists – high season and we were lucky to get rooms arriving so late in the dark. I have been waking horribly early on this holiday – often at 4 or 5 am – and as I got out my torch to check my watch when I woke I expected a similar hideous hour – but it was 8am. Our room had windows, but only technically; there was no natural light and it was pitch black. Cheap though!

Two days and we are back on the plane to Auckland. Hope the cats recognise me

We have bought a two day ticket ($40 US each – doesn’t come cheap to see the wonders of the world) but our second day is mixed. Hordes of Japanese and Chinese tour groups mean we ccan hardly squeeze into the Bantay Srei, temple, all carved pink sandstone on one level with a moat with a traditional orchestra, amputees playing the instruments, thrown in (Brian can never resist music of any kind and buys a CD). Then back to the tuktuk to get to the next sight – a waterfall with carvings from the same 12thC period under the water. We are sustained on the long hot dusty trudge up to the fall by the thought of a swim but it is a sacred place of course and “no enter the water” signs are everywhere. Pringles will have to do.

The highlight of the day is the landmine museum and orphanage on the way back. It is privately run by a man who in his youth as a child soldier for the Kmer Rouge laid landmines and then as an older adult became an expert in defusing them. On display is a copy of National Geographic, Jan 2011, which has a large feature article on him and this enterprise. All proceeds go to the orphanage attached to the museum (no tourists can visit, no photos of children allowed – as elsewhere in Cambodia this is strict) and we buy up bits and pieces including a new bracelet for me to replace the one Brian bought for me back in the mid 80s in Nepal which broke in 2008 in Pompeii. This one is brass and made out of a recycled ordinance (bombs? guns? Surely there is something symbolic here for a marriage?) – the $30US they charge is really a donation. Very nice!

Today we went to see the famous Angkor Wat and other temples built in the 1100s and they spread across kilometres.

We took a long tuktuk ride to these temples. My (Paddy) favourite one was Ta Prohm – it reminded Ellen and me of Cair Paravel Cair in Prince Caspian when Lucy and Edmond etc came back to Narnia after 1000 years. The temple was covered in moss and really tall trees with the roots of the trees growing down through the temple’s huge building stones. The roots of the trees were immense knobbly, dragon-like claws, metres long above the earth, growing in between and over the huge blocks of sandstone into the centre of the temples to create a jungle like effect (says Ellen). This particular temple had been left alone to the elements to decay naturally and that’s why Ellen and I liked it. It was used as a location in the film Tomb Raiders.

Ellen also liked the one with 200 Buddha faces carved into the stupas (Bayon inside Angkor Thom). The faces were metres big and although some were worn away and more decayed than others, probably because of the way the wind was blowing, others were still sharp. Dad liked this one the best too. He always takes so many photos, and obsessively framing the photo perfectly means it takes him much longer than it does other people.

The Angkor temples are one of the seven man-made wonders of the world according to some lists. These were built at the same time as Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

By the end (it took all day, 9 – 5) I was tired and sick of it all but Ellen was still hanging in there and we all got an ice cream.

- Patrick and Ellen

… have sustained us through many a long bus ride in the back of beyond when food was short. Amazingly, they are cheaply available throughout Laos and Vietnam and now, as Oreo connoisseurs, we rank them: dark chocolate filling, white (they rank first equal), strawberry, ice-cream (much anticipated but ultimately disappointing), peanut butter (scrape it off). We are going cold turkey in Cambodia – an Oreo drought here.

On the up side, there seems to be less smoking in Cambodia, and definitely less honking of horns – both are continuous and quite overwhelming in Vietnam and Laos. Sadly, what all three countries have in common however is endless amounts of plastic rubbish strewn on the sides of roads, in fields, on hill sides, on the sea bed ….

Something else that has kept us going: endless games of Oh Hell!, a card game vaguely resembling 500 that my grandmother taught my mother, she me, and me our kids. I know mum will be pleased to read this!
– Annie

Ellen, Patrick and I have been enjoying reading the same books on this holiday although sadly i-pod games provide stiff competition (I battle on regardless - an expert nagger). Day of the Triffids, Lord of the Flies, Animal Farm, 1984 … Of course the greatest pleasure is in discussing the themes, symbols and parallels in these novels after reading them…. although, desite my enthusiasm, I tend to be a lone voice (“yeah, whatever mum”). We visit a Killing Field (there are many) today near Phnom Penh and Paddy compares the Khmer Rouge 1970s regime with Big Brother in 1984.
Of course lots of amputees but also toothless old women, ten year olds with babies on their hips, scarred faces…. Plus lots of signs warning about child trafficking.

A Cambodian charity http://www.friends-international.org/ provides training for orphan street kids as chefs, waiters, welders electricians … and manicurists (VERY big here with tourists). We eat in their restaurant, buy their goods as presents (a bit like a Trade Aid shop) and Ellen gets her nails done (all slightly crooked but lovely all the same). They have signs up reminding us that children in orphanages (numbers have increased by 60% since 2005) are not tourist attractions.

The bar next door is a good place for people watching. A white-haired Frenchman in leather pants sits at a table drinking with a transvestite and a hard-faced woman in thigh-high boots. The seedy German behind us tells another expat that after so many tiny Asians when he looks at a western woman now he thinks of only two words – Battlestar Galactica. A toddler sways up to us and blows a kiss, prompted by his mother and waitress aunty, while two oblivious Australians pour over a Lonely Planet guidebook, planning the next day’s itinerary. A red-faced woman accuses the owner of cheating her and warns us not to trust these people. And through the ornamental trees a voice whispers urgently – you want tuktuk? No? Maybe later? Special tour for you.OK?
